Conservatory Awning FAQs
Can you attach an awning to a conservatory?
Yes, in two main ways. Most often we fix an awning to the house wall above the conservatory, so it extends out over the glass roof. Alternatively, an on-roof system such as the Weinor WGM Top is fixed to the conservatory’s roof frame with brackets, as in this WGM Top installation. We check the roof structure and fixing points before recommending either.
Is it better to shade a conservatory from the outside or inside?
Outside shading stops much of the sun’s heat before it passes through the glass, so it is usually the better choice for keeping a conservatory cool. Inside, under-glass systems are more about controlling glare and light, and the fabric is protected from the weather. Can I have a retractable awning on my conservatory?
Yes. A retractable conservatory awning extends to shade the roof on hot, bright days and retracts when you want full light. Motorised systems can be controlled by remote, and an optional wind sensor retracts the awning automatically when it gets too breezy.
Will a conservatory awning keep my conservatory cooler?
Yes. An outside awning blocks direct sunlight before it heats the glass and the room behind it, so the conservatory stays noticeably cooler on sunny days and is more comfortable to use through the summer. It can also reduce the need for fans or portable air conditioning.
Do I need planning permission for a conservatory awning?
In most cases an awning on a house does not need planning permission. Listed buildings, homes in conservation areas and some flats can be different, so check with your local council or the Planning Portal if you are unsure. We are happy to advise.
